DMA Renovation Competition

The Reimagining the Dallas Museum of Art International Design Competition is an open search for an architect-led multidisciplinary team to revitalize one of North America’s leading art museums.
Over the years, the circulation and way-finding system of the DMA has become inefficient and confusing, even for frequent visitors who have been familiar with the museum for years. In order to address this issue, we propose a new strategy that will make maneuvering throughout the complex more intuitive and easy to navigate.
The void cubes in the proposed garden will serve as echoes of the negative spaces that are visible from inside the galleries. Within the gallery spaces, these negative spaces take the form of small gardens that provide a peaceful and quiet respite from the activity of the galleries. In contrast, we envision the void cubes in the garden as hubs of activity, creating a lively and dynamic atmosphere. The cubes will be equal and opposite in function to the garden spaces inside the galleries, with the goal of creating a balance between stillness and activity.
